What a Drain Field Does

The drain field, sometimes called a leach field, is the part of your septic system that returns treated wastewater to the ground. After solids settle in the tank, liquid flows to the drain field and soaks into the soil. When the drain field is working, you never think about it. When it fails, the whole system backs up.

Bingham On-Site Sewers provides drain field installation and repair for residential and commercial septic systems throughout Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties. We have been doing this work since 1965.

/Signs of Drain Field Problems

  • Soggy ground or standing water over the drain field
  • Sewage odors in the yard
  • Drains that back up even after the tank has been pumped
  • Grass that is noticeably greener or faster-growing over the drain lines
  • Slow drains throughout the house

/How We Evaluate a Drain Field

Before recommending any work, we look at the whole picture: the drainage problem, soil conditions, system capacity, how the property is used and the signs of failure we can see. Some problems can be solved with a targeted repair. Others require a replacement or a new drain field. We will explain the options and why we recommend one over another.

/Drain Field Repair

When only part of a system is affected, a repair may restore proper flow. That can include addressing damaged or clogged lines, distribution problems or other component issues.

/Drain Field Replacement and New Installation

When a drain field has reached the end of its life, or a new property needs a system, we install permitted drain fields designed for the property. Our installations are based on system requirements and County Health Department guidelines. We handle the work with the goal of restoring proper wastewater treatment and long-term performance.

/Protecting Your Drain Field

Keep cars, trucks and heavy equipment off the drain field. Do not plant trees or shrubs with aggressive roots nearby. Direct roof runoff away from the area, and keep the septic tank pumped on schedule so solids do not reach the drain lines.

/Residential and Commercial Drain Fields

We work on drain fields for single-family homes, rental properties, farms and commercial sites across Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties. Commercial properties often have larger systems and higher daily flow, and the drain field needs to be designed and maintained with that in mind. We are licensed and insured, and we explain each step before work begins so you know what to expect.

If you are seeing signs of trouble, it is usually better to call sooner rather than later. Catching a drain field problem early can sometimes mean a smaller repair instead of a full replacement.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a failing drain field be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?+

Do drain field installations require a permit?+
